The Cruising Club Fractional Boat Ownership business was first launched in Sydney, Australia in 1998, by founder Mark Cairney. With headquarters located at Birkenhead Point Marina in Sydney Harbour, the business grew from a single 30ft boat in Sydney, to a range of models and sizes from 28ft to 56ft, primarily from Australian manufacturers Sunrunner Marine, Mustang Marine and Riviera, at a number of locations in New South Wales and Queensland.

In 2006 the Australian business was sold by the founder to a separate management company, and a new international franchise business was formed to expand the concept and intellectual property on a global, franchised basis.
The Cruising Club Australia subsequently acquired competitors Sydney Boat Share and Boat Syndicates and has been renamed Shared Boating. Today Shared Boating Australia is one of the most successful Fractional Boat Ownership companies in Australia.
